Ball State University’s College of Sciences and Humanities is excited to submit a proposal for a Forensic Science Camp to be offered in June 2025. The intent of this camp is to introduce high school-age campers to the field of forensic sciences and an opportunity to visit Ball State University and gain a college campus experience. Campers will be exposed to five academic disciplines – biology, chemistry, computer science, psychology science, and criminal justice and criminology – all through a forensic science lens. Ultimately, this interdisciplinary approach will provide high school-age campers an opportunity to explore subject-matter and careers in forensic biology, forensic chemistry, digital forensics, and behavioral forensics.

Exp: 4102025

The camp is called “Forensic Science Camp” and will be available to approximately 30 high school students, ranging from rising sophomores to rising seniors. This camp is intended to be residential, where campers from all over the state of Indiana will spend five days on the Ball State University campus being exposed to academic disciplines in the area of STEM and the social sciences. Moreover, students will gain an in-depth residential experience that will provide them a greater sense of college life. Students will be taken on a campus tour, reside in a college dormitory, and eat in the campus dining halls. Throughout the day, students will attend workshops and interactive activities introducing them to four areas of forensic science, and the existing forensic science program at Ball State University. Throughout the week, campers will engage in interactive educational activities that touch upon four areas of forensic science.

Campers will conduct fingerprint and blood splatter analysis, while also learning how to categorize a crime scene. Chemistry facilitators will provide instrumentation demonstrations, and have students conduct their own chemical analyses on potential “illicit” material. Experts in digital forensics and cybersecurity will address evidence extraction from computers and mobile devices. The Psychological Science faculty will introduce campers to topics on mental health, psychopathy, and criminal profiling. Throughout all activities and workshops, students will learn how the forensic sciences interplay with the criminal law and the criminal justice system.
